As pieces fire in the kiln, the glaze melts and forms a glass surface. Sometimes the glaze will pull back entirely from the clay surface in spots, leaving bare clay patches. These spots will not affect the functionality of properly vitrified stoneware, which is impermeable to water. Most pieces with more than one or two small crawls will be marked for the seconds bin.
