Sublime Goddess Pottery was founded by me, Sheri Gormley, in 2023 after completing two years of weekly pottery classes at the Norris Arts studio in Camas, Washington. With more than 30 years of graphic design, web design, and marketing experience, as well as a B.A. in Art History and Communications, I was ready to try my hand at making something beautiful with a physical medium. I enjoyed the creation process so much that I set up a pottery studio in my home office in Washington state, eventually adding a wheel and a slab roller to help me with my projects.
Because of my graphic design background, most of my work is hand-built rather than thrown on a wheel since I love to add textures and designs to my projects using rolling pins, cutters, stencils, and lots of other tools. At some point I hope to add my own kiln—but than means I will have to clean out the garage. So for now I am firing my pieces at the studio kiln. My witch hat luminaries sparked a lot of interest, and so I set up a website to make it easier for people to look at and buy my creations. All sales are processed through my Etsy shop.

Why Sublime Goddess Pottery?
Choosing a branding name for my pottery took a lot of thought. Many potters choose to use their name, followed by “pottery” or “ceramics” or something like that, but I wanted to do something different. I wanted to come up with a name that would use my initials, SG, as I was already signing my pottery with my initials and I wanted whatever brand name I came up with to tie back to my name loosely.
That proved to be a challenge. I started two lists of adjectives and nouns that started with “S” and “G”, and kept adding to each list as I came up with new words. Then came the hard part —finding two words that worked together and made sense, AND had a website domain name that was available for purchase. It took a couple of weeks to work through it, but I finally settled on Sublime Goddess:
Sublime
- Outstanding spiritual, intellectual, or moral worth
- Tending to inspire awe usually because of elevated quality (as of beauty, nobility, or grandeur) or transcendent excellence
- Elevated or exalted, especially in dignity or honor
- Something rendered finer (as in purity or excellence)
- Something inferior that has been converted into something of higher worth
Goddess
- A female god. In many cultures, goddesses are often associated with themes of spinning, weaving, beauty, love, sexuality, motherhood, domesticity, creativity, and fertility.
- A woman whose great charm or beauty arouses adoration
- A greatly admired or highly skilled woman
This made sense to me because I am a highly skilled woman who is taking a lump of clay and refining it into something beautiful and useful. The domain name was available, and it really worked with my pottery stamp design, so it all just fell into place.
