New Build: Berry Basket & Underplate (Upping the Ante, Part Three)

Not all the news was bad from Friday’s kiln opening. My latest berry basket project made it out of the bisque kiln intact, and so today’s effort at Norris Arts was to glaze both the berry basket and the underplate, and get it into the kiln.
I got to the studio around 2:10, and after disposing of the kiln disaster, I got my work station set up for glazing. Two hours later, both pieces were ready to head to the glazed wares stack for firing. I have a great fondness for Georgies Terrazzo glaze, which has a lovely off-white glossy base with golden-brown speckles in it, so I decided to do the inside of the basket and the top of the underplate with that.
First, I had to sand, wipe down, and wax the bottoms for each piece, and then I applied Georgies Tree Bark interactive pigment all over, and then wiped it back.I used two coats of the Terrazzo, and applied two coats of Spectrum’s Bottle Green celadon to the base of the basket, and the bottom of the underplate.
I decided to drop in some pops of glossy color on the beautiful floral accents using Stroke & Coats. I chose Ruby Slippers for the large accent flowers on the underplate handles and on the corners of the basket, with Dandelion for the center of each flower. Moody Blues was calling to me from my paint box for the perky floral border along the rim of the basket, and I dropped in some Dandelion for the center of each flower. They remind me of Forget-Me-Nots — but I’m sure it had nothing to do with hearing that song on Watercolors during the drive in 😉.
Finally, for the handles on the underplate and the rim of the basket, I applied two coats of Ancient Jasper. And that was a wrap! Fingers crossed for the results, which I’ll reveal next week.
