Final Glazing: Berry Baskets & Cracker Tray
Four hour marathon glazing session today to put all the final details on these latest pieces. You can see the glazed pieces in the gallery below.
I’ve been wanting to try Blue Rutile and Oatmeal on something for awhile, and decided to give it a go here. Because this is my first rodeo with these two glazes (which are known to run when used together), I decided to dip my toe in the water by just using the Oatmeal along the rim and decorative elements. I waxed the feet for this piece last week and made sure to clean off any glaze before turning it in for firing, so fingers crossed it doesn’t stick to the kiln shelf.
As for the baskets, I’m trying out some other celadons for the main basket treatment, and experimenting with Saturated Gold vs. Ancient Copper for the border rims. Curious to see what I like best. I’m sticking with the Candy Apple Red for the strawberries because it worked so well on the last one. I’m also trying out an underplate for one of the baskets, and that is also waiting to be fired now. I don’t use an underplated myself at home; I usually just put the berries in the basket, rinse them, and let them sit on a towel by the sink for a minute or two before putting them out on the table to serve. But some people don’t want any drips on their tables, so why not? It can also be used as a small serving plate, so we’ll see how it turns out.
